Homework    Policy

Homework is usually given  Monday through Thursday.  A planner is used in 3rd grade and the homework is written on the chalkboard every night.  The children are encouraged  to write down their assignments in their planner.  Homework  is designed to reinforce what was taught in class.  It should take less than 30 minutes to complete.  If the homework is not completed, a homework slip will be sent home to be signed and returned. Tests are announced  a few days in advance.  From time to time students will be assigned projects, especially in Reading.  They are designed to enrich  and reinforce the  message of the theme.  The projects are optional.

Important Papers

Please return  papers, such as notes from the school or test  papers  that need to be signed, promptly.

Grading

The grading for third grade is S, I, and U.

S=  100-80

I=   79-65

U=  64 and below

Book Orders

We order from Troll Carnival Books.  Order forms are sent home every three or four weeks.  The children are under no obligation to buy the books, but they are inexpensive and  designed for our grade level.  If you make out a check, kindly make it out to Troll Carnival Books.

Reading

Our Reading series incorporates spelling and language along with reading.  We cover six themes in third grade. Each theme has a specific spelling list and  grammar focus.  Theme tests, Skills tests, and  Vocabulary tests  are given at the end of each theme. The students will also complete a book report by the end of the year.

Math

The math series is a whole new approach to the teaching of  math.  We are trying to get the children to use reasoning and logic in their approach to solving math problems.  Students need to explain their answers.  Keep drilling the basic math facts at home.  The second half of the year  we will  be working on multiplication and division.

*Both Reading and Math are aligned to PA Standards.

Social Studies

Students will explore the United States by studying different communities within the U.S.

Science

Students are introduced to life science, earth science and physical science this year.

PSSA Testing

Third grade is the first year that the students take the PSSA tests.  We prepare all year by practicing the format of the tests (multiple choice and performance tasks).  In the spring there will be a Website for parents and students to prepare for the teats.  Information will be given out when dates of the test get closer.

Computers

Once the computers are up and running, we will  have a daily schedule for the students.  They know which day of the week they will be using the computer.  We utilize the time from 8:20 until 8:40 for the computer, as well as other times throughout the day.
